There are three reasons why Mary Richmond has made a significant contribution to the world of social work. She wrote the book “Social Diagnosis”, which was the first comprehensive introduction to social casework.

In addition, her article made social workers respect clients’ decisions rather than making decision directly without clients’ opinions. For example, social workers discuss and analyze clients’ predicament with them, and help clients determine the strategy for problem solving. Social workers accept clients’ decisions without lawbreaking, even if the decisions made by clients does not seem to be the best choice. Social workers could provide a lot of analysis or advice for them, but respect the choice of the client in the end. Consequently, social workers alter the role of mentors to partnerships so that clients are willing to cooperate.

Finally, her writings reminded social workers to discover the advantages of individual cases. Because she believed that everyone had a lot of potential or advantage in their lives, social workers needed to help clients find their strengths. Thanks to her advocate, clients are no longer seen as useless people. Not only did she convert social workers’ attitude to positive for their clients, but she also encouraged clients to strengthen their advantages.

In conclusion, Mary Richmond has completely changed the world of social work forever, and her book has made a considerable impact on the world until now.
