There is no doubt that people pursue greater wealth than others in order to get reputation or higher social status in society since more and more people take wealth as a metric to judge a person’s success. As far as I am concerned, there are many ways other than material possession that can be used to measure success.

First of all, it is more essential to judge an individual success by whether a person can achieve important personal goals instead of wealth or social fame. To be more specific, success is a competition with ourselves rather than comparing with some external conditions. Take my cousin as an example. He got good grades in college entrance exams. His parents wanted him to enroll in the best college of medicine and become a doctor in the future. But he chose to enroll in a design department of a normal college since he wanted to be a website designer. People may think that he may be more successful and have a better life if he chose to study in medical school. However, he feels very satisfied and thinks that his life is a successful one because he is doing the things that he enjoys and is on the way to achieve his personal goal.

In addition, people would respect and value those who can bring good impact to others as successful people. Take my neighbor, Amy, as an example. She is not a wealthy woman, but she spends most of her free time doing volunteer works for the community. She volunteers to be crossing guard to protect children to walk safely to school and assists the solitary elderly to do grocery shopping. Due to her selfless contribution, she gains the respect from all of people in the community.

In conclusion, wealth and material possession are not the only criteria to measure whether a person is a successful or not. I believe that a person’s ability to achieve personal goal and bring good impact to others are also important factors to become a successful person.
